Biological Bases (Week 2) Hello Dolly et al

Science and humankind has entered a new era with the discovery of the ability to clone large mammals. Quite recently human DNA has been inserted in a cloned sheep adding to the interest in this topic. Go to http://www.animalresearch.info/en/medical/timeline/Dolly and explore the site. This may take sometime but, it will allow you to answer some interesting questions. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, but take the time to think and then write about the following:
1.) Should we attempt to clone a human?
2.)What are the ethical considerations of cloning animals and humans?
3.)Should the U.S. government stop funding basic research into cloning as proposed by President Clinton?
4.)Would you consider cloning yourself?

27 comments:

  1. 1.) No, I don't think we should clone. I don't think that anyone has to right or should have the power to clone anything.
2.) The ethic issues with cloning to me are people playing God. I don't think anyone should be powerful enough to create something besides the nature way of course.
3.)I think the U.S. could do alot better things with their money other than spending it on cloning. There is so much more research that needs to be discovered, like research on cancer or diabetes.
4.) I would absolutely never want to clone myself, I'm my own individual and I wouldn't want anyone esle to be like me because then I wouldn't be as unique.

  2. 1. No, I do not think that we should attempt to clone humans, or any other organisms for that matter. I don't believe that its our right as humans to clone anything.
    2. I feel that its unethical to clone animals and humans because God is the creator of all things so who are we to try and duplicate or recreate his creations? I also feel that its unethical because we have to take into consideration the physical and genetic effects that the cloning process will have on the clone itself. Mutations can occur, and diseases that would normally set in at a later age can occur early.
    3. I think the U.S government should fund the research for cloning organs only. The organs could be used to save lives.
    4. No, I would never consider cloning myself. The world isn't ready for another me and quite frankly neither am I. Plus its not worth the bad effects that could come along with cloning.

    1. No, i don't believe we should clone people...yes it could save lives but it doesn't atone for destroying a life. The ends don't justify the mean.
    2. i beleive that it is unethical because there are always people who abuse power and will also abuse this power.
    3. I think the U.S. government should better use their funding in other ways.
    4. No i don't think that I would clone my self...not only would our personalities be different but we share enviornmental differences.

  5. 1. I don't think people should clone people because, it just werid and if something bad happens in the process then that person is going to have difficulty in society.
    2. Some ethical reasons for clonging humans and animals would be to get organs for the orginal clone. But, I don't think it is right.
3.I think the United States government should stop funding research for cloning and focus on other important matters.
4.I would not consider clonging myself because, to of me would be crazy.

  6. i think we should clone it is something i enjoy hearing about.

  7. 1.) No, i don't think that cloning should be done
2.) I think cloning in a way is wrong because you can harm the person or animal your doing it to
3.) I think the US government should stop funding research for cloning because cloning something isnt right
4.) I would never clone myself because who could handle two of me??

  8. 1) I dont think we should clone humans because i dont feel its morally right.
    2) I dont think we shoud clone at all because we could cause harm to the animal or person.
    3) I feel if the US would stop sending money to people for cloning we could use it on more important things.
    4) I would never clone myself, because i dont feel it would be right for my family to have to go through that. Its just not something i would consider.

  9. when you clone you dont have to clone the whole organism. If Somebody needs an organ i dont think that you should not do it because you dont think its right. If it will save a life then why not do it?

  10. I think we should clone a human. I mean why not, we have to kinda explore stuff in able to know more. And like if nothing good come ome out of it oh well....we can just start doing something new.
And most of the people dont have a basic understanding of cloning....because u rarely see media showing it.( Or im just a cave man who don't watch any TV xD) But when like u say to people what u think about cloning...it's an absolyte NO. I mean how do you gonna say no if the only form of "cloning" you know was the one you have seen in thouse wierd movies?

  11. I would personally not like to be cloned. We're all different.. isn't there a reason for that? But honestly, if the government wants to clone, they're going to do it. And, of course, there are ethical issues with cloning. I am a believer in God, and to fit the sterotype, I do not believe it's a right that humans should have. I think science is just taking it all a little far.

  12. 1) Yes. I think it would be an resonable approach to clone the CELL of a human if it is going towards finding a cure for cancer and other 'killer' diseases. If it is in the best interest of helping people then why not? They did the same thing to animal cells and found ways of improving medicine! It has also given scientist and the world a better understanding of how the body of animals are genetically set up. Wouldn't you want to know more about how your body structure is genetically set up?
2)Ethical considerations include the danger of the cloned cell getting into the wrong hands and used for the wrong purpose.
3)I beg to differ with my fellow classmates. Why is it that we find it neccessary to spend money on war when it is doing more harm than good to the U.S and other countries, but yet we make a fuss and frown upon anything that will improve our society especially HEALTH CARE? I believe that if cloning leads to the successful finding of treatments for cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other deadly diseases, then the U.S Federal Government should not stop the funding for basic research cloning.
4)If I was diagnosed with a harmful disease that threated my life, then yes I would consider cloning my CELLS to help scientist find a better treatment or even a cure for my disease, but I would not authorize the full cloning of my being i.e MYSELF. It's just a step closer to the advancements of medicines.

  13. 1.I don't think that we should try to clone a human because it might harm the person. Also because if it was successful, the cloning, whose to say that it didn't go correctly and the clone comes out with disformities(mentally or physically), then what kind of life would that clone be. Also if it was successful what would happen to the original human? What if the clone comes out with a different personality and people liked the clone better? How would that person fit into society then, or reverse situation? There are too many negative outcomes that just overweigh the good ones in my opinion.
2.The ethical considerations in cloning are harm to the human/animal and the clone getting into the wrong hands(or even the cloning process, we wouldn't want someone cloning like 400 Adolf Hitlers would we?).
3.I think that the U.S. government should stop funding research for cloning to a point. I think that cloning things(cells basically) should be funded and allowed because that is directed towards just finding cures. But this whole thing about cloning people and animals and junk should not be allowed or funded.
4.I would not consider cloning myself because I like the fact that there is only one of me, which means I am one of a kind. Even cloning my cells I wouldn't want, because yes it would possibly help in curing a disease but when you get a disease something happens. When you get a disease, after you get over the depression of having it, you get a sense that you need to do things that you wouldn't normally do. You do things that you've always wanted to do but never would. This is an incredible feeling and you get to enjoy things that you probably wouldn't have before. So if you cured the disease you would essentially not have had the opportunity to do those things.

  14. 1. I do not think we should attempt to clone a human. There seems like there would be legal issues with that.
    2. I think that it is ethical to clone organs by using stem cells. If it'll save someones life then i think it would be fine. But i don't think its ethical to clone a whole human or animal.
    3. The government should continue funding for research on basic cloning, like on organ cloning. Obviously, they have plenty of money to waste on other pointless things, so if money was going to something that could save lives the funding should be continued.
    4. I would never consider cloning myself. I think that is just wrong. Although i dont think the clone would be exactly like me. They would grow up in a whole different environment and have a lot of different life experiences than i did.

  15. 1.) i am not totally against cloning at all but i don't think you should clone a whole human. However i think the cloning of several organisms should be used to save lifes of people with deathly diseases.
2.) i think you as a human should not have the control about a life to exists or not. It would let human get too much power in my opinion.
3.) in my opinion with the health aspect of cloning needed organisms i wouldn't say the U.S. government should stop it.
4.) NO ! because for me the aspect of individualism is too important .

  16. 1. I do not think cloning of humans is right.
    2. I think it is okay to clone an organ using stem cells just for the simple fact that it could save someone's life. But cloning a whole human could go against ethical issues such as religion and people's beliefs.
    3. If the money funding for cloning is going to save someone's life or helping find a cure for cancer, for instance, then I think funding should be continued. But if the money is being funded to clone a human, then I believe the money is being wasted, and maybe should be used to better our economy, maybe just a bit.
    4. I would not consider cloning myself at all, because I'm unique in my own way and I wouldn't be the only me if I was cloned. Even twins have their own personalities and traits that make them different.

  17. 1) Okay so scientists have been inefficient with animal cloning and only like 1 or 2 of the offspring out of 100 come out and even those come out with problems. With all the failed attempts of cloning animals it would be totally unethical and potentially dangerous to try and clone a human.
2)Point blank, science has taken the idea of cloning way to far. If you need an organ, clone the organ. It's unethical to clone a human, I mean really what's the point? Science is trying to take nature's place.
3)The money could be put to something a lot more useful, like to the research of serious cancers or HIVs.
4)The world isn't ready for two of me.

    ReplyDelete
  18. While I am not sure how I feel about cloning a whole being, I would honestly agree to most anything to keep my family safe. Ethics are a very big deal to me and to most others, but guess with science you have to be a little flexible. If someone can just realize what they are doing and the effects then I think it is okay as long as no one is getting hurt. The funding should still be there because I think even though people say they don't agree with cloning if it came right down to someone loved in danger most anyone would agree to cloning.

  19. 1) No, I don't think cloning should be done. I don't feel it's right to do that to someone.
2)I feel that it's unethcial to clone a human or an animal. Only God should be in charge of making people. It can also be harmful to people and animals.
3)Yes, the U.S. has WAY more things they could be paying for instead of researching cloning.
4)No, I'm me, and I'm happy with that.

  20. 1. i dont think cloninq should be done, because of the fact tht something could go wrong, and cause mental or disable abilities.
2.i think it is unethcial to clone a human or a animal. only god should be in charge of that ability.,
3.yes, the qov has better things to work on than things that could qo wronq.
4.no i am very happy with the way qod made me, and there's only one me.

  21. 1. i dont feel like cloning is a good idea, it may have some side effects that we are not yet aware of.
2.i feel like god is the only one who should be creating humans
3.the us government has way more important things to do than cloning things..
4.I feel like if there was more than one lindsey, i wouldnt be as special.. so heckkkk no ! :)

  22. 1)I feel that cloning is unethical and plays the role of God. Cloning may also posess threats and symptoms to humans that we will be unaware of until it happens to a cloned human.

2)Like I said I believe that cloning is playing the role of God. I believe it is inhumane and messes with the laws of nature.

3)The US is is trillion dollars worth of debt and a war right now, so the government definentley has more important things to worry about than cloning.

4)I don't even like someone wearing the same shirt as me, so I am not down for cloning, FO SHO.

  23. 1.) No, i don't think that cloning should be done. i believe there is only one person, and there shouldn't be another like them.
2.) I think its wrong because you could harm the person or animal.and like i said God made us who we are as individuals. and there shouldnt be another.
3.) I think the US government should stop funding research for cloning because cloning something isnt right
4.) I would never clone myself because who could handle two of me??

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1. No, we should never attempt to clone a human.
    2. People's ethics will always get in the way of cloning because it is not an ethical decision.
3.Yes the government should stop because cloning is unethical and the government should no give out money to unethical opperations.
4.No because when you clone cells loose lifetime and i would want to have the longest life possible.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. i dont think we should attempt human cloning.
    2. cloning could harm someone! its just not right.
    3. yes the government should stop cloning because i think thats just a waste of money to give oout.
    4. i would never ever clone myself. i wouldnt want like another me!

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1.)No i dont think we should because just think of what kind of abomination it would be. Man can create machines and structures but life that is God's territory and we should only intervene when we take what we need to survive a cloned human would be a souless lifeless shell of flesh and bone.
2.)I think that if you clone an animal your leaning but to clone a human is to ultimately commit genocide or worse go against the principles everyone tries to keep in place which is Humanity
3.)I think if cloning is used to find cures and help people live longer then its ok and should be promoted
4.) no i wouldnt clone myself but i wouldnt mind cloning my organs to help me live longer or die with ease.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1.no i think people should clone becuase there can be something wrong with the clone animal or person. If god wanted their to be clones then everybody would have a twin.
    2. i think cloning animals may be fine sometime as long as its for a good cause, like to learn how to save someone.
3.i think they should keep cloning as long as their using it for something good.
    3. no i wouldnt clone myself if my mama didnt have another me than a well.
